By Michael Seril on Jan 23, 2009 in Featured
Michael’s guest is Professor of Kinesiology, Dr. Kathy Barlow from Whittier College in California. Dr. Barlow has many years of experience working with children and fitness.
She is a member of the board of the Excellence Through Exercise Foundation. With a wonderful hint of “southern drawl” in her voice Dr. Barlow first tells us about her background. She received degrees from Louisiana Tech University; and went on to earn her PhD from Texas Woman’s University in Educational Leadership and Sports Management. She has been an instructor and Physical Education Coach for many years; both in early education and college level.
Listen in as this wonderful educator tells of her love of working with kids and teaching others how to motivate our young people to greater health and fitness.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The study of kinesiology, as human movement, and leisure science, as leisure time pursuits, has changed significantly in recent years. While physical education continues to encompass the preparation of teachers and coaches for sport skills, the scientific disciplines of kinesiology, biomechanics, motor learning/motor control and exercise physiology have gained prominence as necessary aspects for a complete curricula. Society, with more free time and stress, is demanding more from recreation.
Students can major or minor in kinesiology and leisure science while emphasizing teaching/coaching, sport and recreation management or pre-physical therapy. The major can be completed without an emphasis as well. The department offers activity courses in individual, dual, and team sports.

I am so excited to hear enthusiastic, intelligent and caring discussions about this overwhelmingly pervasive problem of obesity that is facing our nation! As an active, forty year old mother of three children (ages 20,16 & 13) , I have always prioritized knowledge of healthy nutrition and an active lifestyle with my family. I believe that lack of basic fundamental knowledge about what our bodies need to functional at an optimal level is the downfall in most families today. Unfortunately, this lack of knowledge will lead our children into a critically unhealthy adulthood, at best, unless we, as their guardians, do something drastic NOW! I applaud Michael Seril, his staff and all his guests for stepping up and providing families with the information, resources and motivation to help improve the lives of our next generation. I like to think of my body this way: treat it like the amazing machine that it is…as a general rule-only put in what it needs to run at peak performance. I’m pretty sure you do that for the machine sitting in you’re driveway…why not do it for your body? Remember, you can’t trade this machine in for a newer model-it’s yours for life!
